What is cross country riding?

by | Jun 9, 2026 | Cross Country, Horse Riding, Horse Training | 0 comments

Cross-country (XC) horse riding is an equestrian discipline where horse-and-rider teams gallop over long outdoor courses, tackling varied, natural terrain and solid, immovable obstacles.

The sport tests the horse’s endurance, bravery, and conditioning, as well as the rider’s pace judgment and technical skills.  Cross-country is primarily known as the second and most thrilling phase of Eventing (a competition that also includes Dressage and Show Jumping).

🌿Key Elements of Cross-Country Riding

🌍Natural Terrain: Courses are typically set across large fields, rolling hills, and varied footing.

🪵Solid Obstacles: Unlike the brightly colored, lightweight poles in show jumping that fall when knocked, XC jumps are heavy, solid structures built from natural materials like timber, hedges, and stone.

⚡Complex Features: Riders must navigate technical obstacles such as water complexes, steep drops and banks, and narrow ditches.

⏱️Pace and Timing: The goal is to complete the course within an optimum time. Going too slowly incurs time penalties, while going too fast can also be penalized.

🦺Safety & Gear: Due to the challenging nature of the sport, both horse and rider wear specialized protection, including safety vests and helmets.

“A horse gallops with its lungs, perseveres with its heart, and wins with its character.”
